The Danger of Scuba Diving - Facts and Myths.
For an adventure type sport scuba diving is relatively safe providing one sticks to a standard set of regulations and rules. It’s only when these are broken do we find people putting themselves, and potentially others, in danger.
We can begin by examining what the most common mistakes are that people make that puts them in a situation of danger, in doing so we can help to put things into perspective regarding the dangers that one faces when scuba diving and thus change people’s perception.
Failure To Obtain Standard Certification.
Scuba diving equipment rental shops are generally regulated which means that they should not rent out scuba equipment to any individual that does not have some level of certification and that can’t provide evidence of this. Unforetunately there is a way round this, as there is with most things, and we have seen individuals that are certified rent equipment out and then pass it over to novice divers that have no qualifications.
We have seen this kind of irresponsible activity increase due to the auction websites that have spread over the world wide web. This kind of thing is a poor reflection of what the scuba community does not want as we need our sport to work within a strongly regulated framework to avoid any bad publicity from accidents caused by this sort of thing.
Scuba Diving And Limited Skill Sets.
There are some dives of a specialist nature that require experience in these areas. Ice diving, wreck penetration, shark diving and canern diving fit into this category.
If you are going to try these types of dives without the neccessary skills you are putting your life on the line. A small amount of money and time spent on a specialist course could save your life.
Diving Under The Influence Of Alcohol.
While most people who partake in the sport of scuba diving do so in a safe and responsible manner, there are those who take irresponsibility to new heights. In particular, there will be those who will go scuba diving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
This is, of course, an incredibly dangerous practice and has led to a number of fatalities. As such, it is critical not to dive while under the influence of any addictive substances.
Scuba Diving And Poor Conditioning.
It is something that can be quite difficult to talk about but mishaps and fatalities sometimes happen because the people involved are morbidly obese or who smoke and are also morbidly obese. Statistically people in this category can suffer cardiac arrests whilst diving.
All the issues we have mentioned can be addressed and therefore the danger levels can be reduced significantly. It is down to each individual to recognize them and act accordingly.
